Cutting the cable, but now where do I get my racing?

After thinking about it for a few months we've decided to cancel our cable TV and go the Apple TV/HDTV antenna route and save $120/month. With the HD antenna I'm able to pick up CBS, NBC and FOX (yay football!) but no ABC (boo, IndyCar!). Hulu Plus includes NBCSN and I assume FoxSports 1 (their website still lists SPEED), but I don't know if that includes live events.

So younger, more tech savvy Jalops, where can I get my racing fix?

I second this, as I too do not get cable. Just the interwebs.

My new apt lets me tap into the buildings antenna for tv, works awesome!

As for sports, I dunno! I tend to download the races I really want to see.

I'll have to see what apple tv is all about, how do you like it?

We're in the process of doing the same... Cutting the cable is SO liberating. When I tallied up the STB and service costs and compared that to how little TV we watch, I was appalled.

We went the Roku3 route, have a Sony BDP with streaming, and connected the PC via HDMI (all on hardwire internet) so there is puhlenty of digital media available to stream... However, I do want to make sure I can get my F1 fix... We're not in an area in which we can receive OTA HDTV, unfortunately, so it's all got to be streamed.

I am interested in in hearing more about the availability of streamed motorsports... In fact, this could be a really good topic for one of the Jalopnik writers to tackle... The LifeHacker and Gizmodo teams have written a few 'cut-the-cable' articles, but nothing specific to getting motorsports streams....

Matt ? Torch ? Raph ? Patrick ? Máté ? Who'll bite ?

If you have the Apple TV 2, you can jailbreak it and live stream pretty much anything. My cousin has been using it to live stream the Sky Sports broadcast of almost every F1 race since last may.

What you're talking about is one of the largest points of contention between "Cable Cutters" and people who still have regular TV. The problem is, the major networks are going to hold on to those exclusive broadcast rights for as long as possible. since things like NFL network are the ONLY reason people still pay for cable. However, we all know that the internet will be the future of TV content so it's ultimately a matter of time before Netflix or HULU pick up an agreement with ESPN or the NFL. Just don't expect to get the games or races for free. You should expect to see a pay option similar to the price point of Netflix ($9.00 a month). Sorry to say, but you may just have to play the waiting game for a year or two. But take heart, they will come around eventually. Cable will be effectively dead within the next five years.

I've never had cable, so I am in somewhat of the same situation. I have to get almost all my racing from the seedy underbelly of the internet. Sometimes I can catch a stream somewhere, but usually I have to download it.

for the time being, it's best to fight the good fight and just deal with not having live sports. soon enough...

It was a toss up between the Apple TV and Roku. Actually I purchased the Apple TV using credit card miles and I could do the same with the Roku if I don't like it.

I cut my cable about three years ago and haven't looked back since. And you are completely correct, Finding ways to watch sporting events has been the toughest part about the transition and it took me about a year to find a solid solution. I have always been into the sports that were never broadcasted locally like rugby and F1 and cricket anyways so finding a method to watch has always been a challenge. The best solution I have found yet is http://www.vipboxus.co/ . It takes some fiddling to get the best stream but once found you can watch anything from baseball to Rugby, Hockey and almost all of the major races From Formula 1 to WRC to ALMS. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Live racing is the only reason I still have cable. I like watching a few shows but I can always download new episodes.

And there is less and less of it that I bother with anymore. Perhaps it isn't as big an issue as I thought.

Screw Apple TV (I had one for 2 weeks and it NEVER worked right, and I am a 100% apple guy). Get a Roku and be wwwwaaaaayyyy happier. They work amazing and you can customize the channels.

Dear Moez, thank you for letting me know this is possible. I'm now annoyed with myself for not realizing sooner.

Why are sports so expensive to broadcast in the first place? Don't the ads that are shown during the broadcast generate enough revenue already?

It (effectively) didn't cost me anything. If it doesn't work out, I can get a Roku for the same credit card points I'm not otherwise using.

NFL offers a streaming package that isn't expensive, but it also isn't live.

Think about it. All of those men in tight pants down on the field/track make more than the GDP of some third world countries.

Pay options like that'll be one of the best options for now. I know that in the UK the races can be streamed, but not in 'murica.
